Both teams were strong on the pitcher’s mound Thursday, but Alpharetta defeated Pope 3-2 in the first week region showdown. Coming into the game, both teams were ranked in the state’s top ten in 6A – Pope at 1 and Alpharetta at 3.
The pitching was impressive on both sides. Sam Stratton started the game for Alpharetta. He pitched four and two thirds innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6 batters.
It took until the 4th inning for either team to score. Pope scored one run in the top of the 4th. Powered by a lead off home-run from Bradley Rowlinson, the Raiders scored 2 in the bottom half of the 4th. Pope tied the game up at two in the top of the fifth inning, when Tibbs singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run.
Charlie Goldstein earned the win for the Raiders. He surrendered zero runs on three hits over three and a third innings, striking out seven.
Herlitz took the loss for Pope. He allowed zero hits and zero runs, striking out one and walking zero.
Vailes started the game for Pope. He lasted three and a third innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four.
Ryan Schipf, Cameron Dorsey, Bradley Rowlinson, Josh Maicon, and Jacob Lassiat each had one hit in the game.
Pralgo led Pope with two hits in four at bats.
