Tonight starts yet another new era in girls’ basketball here at Alpharetta. After 3 straight coaches that were here for only 1 season Coach David Walden has been hired to restore the Lady Raiders program to where it was just a few short years ago with back to back, undefeated region championships. Coach Walden has made the commitment to this team, this program, this school and this community to have some consistency in the leadership of the program. Erin Rose is back to coach the JV team again and be a varsity assistant this season. After a 1 year off David Rose is back as an assistant, and Shane Kearney has been added as a new assistant.
Graduated from last year’s team are Abi Quinny, Deona Cole, Grayson Davis, Asia Gill and Teja Finley. Teja is playing this season for Columbus State. Coach Walden does have some seniors this year that have been in the program each year; Courtney Andrews, Lauren Mackey, Chisom Maduka, and Nebrina Harton. Nebrina played varsity as a freshman so this is her 4th head coach in 4 years.
The boys’ team has the same head coach Fredrick Hurt. Coach Hurt is entering his 8th year here at Alpharetta. Coach Hurt has added two new assistants that he is very excited about in Al Hansbrough and Lee Nicholson. The boys’ team is coming off a school record setting season with 25 wins and going 18-0 in the Region, and advancing to the Elite 8 of the State Playoffs. Last year’s team did lose a lot to graduation: Mark Eze, Aaron Thomas, Roy Winston, Afam Maduka who is now playing at Oxford at Emory, Jaylon Gamble who is now playing at Florida State College, and Devontae Cacok who is now playing at UNC at Wilmington. Gamble and Cacok were both All Region players and Cacok was an All State player. The Raiders do have 5 returning players with Carlos Carriere, Elem Nwuke, Eric McElroy, Mekhi Henderson, and Thomas Jenei. Tonight’s scrimmage will help determine the final roster for this season.
Norcross is tonight’s opponent and both the boys and girls teams are regulars in the Final 4 and State championship games.
